THE INSTANT Clay and Grandma closed the front door behind them, Niki made a dash for the stairs and the safety of her own bedroom. Even if she wasnât asleep when he returnedâto be honest, there wasnât a chance in hell that sheâd be asleep when he returnedâhe wouldnât know that.
At least she hoped with every fiber of her being he wouldnât.
With trembling hands she threw off her clothes, twisted her long straight hair up into a loose knot and stepped beneath the stinging spray of the shower. This should helpâa rush of chilly water designed to snap her back to reality.
But then she looked down and saw the pebbled tips of her breasts and nearly collapsed against the shower stall, remembering the fleeting pressure of his palmâ
Stop it, she raged at herself. She didnât want a sleazy affair, even with a man as desirable as this one. A relationship with him could never go anywhere. It would break her heart, and in the end sheâd be worse off than she was now.
If that was possible. Her entire body thrummed with unfulfilled desire. Sheâd never wanted to make love to any man the way she longed to make love to this oneâto let this one make love to her. Not even Steve Miles, her first love, had filled her with this kind of overpowering passion.

The brief scene in the kitchen had left him plenty worked up. The memory of how her breast had fit the curve of his hand was imprinted on his memory, making him groan and twist uneasily on the pickup seat. Heâd been so close to his goalâ¦.
Jeez, his goal wasnât simply to get her into bedâat least, it wasnât supposed to be. He was here to convince her to compete for the Queen of the Cowgirls title. The other was just aâ¦diversion.
Of course, if they were intimate she might realize more quickly the benefits of spending the next year in his company. He could modestly hope so, at any rate. But he wouldnât use sex to get her to change her mind, he vowed. The passion with which he desired her didnât have a damn thing to do with Mother Hubbard or her Duds. It had to
